As another promotional venture, HBO has gathered tracks from some of today’s most talented rappers and Latin artists for a Game of Thrones Mixtape.
As if they weren’t taunting us enough already with the extensive promos for Season 4, on Friday (3/7), HBO is dropping a ten track playlist aptly titled “Catch the Throne”. The album will feature artists like Common, Big Boi, Wale and Outkast going on about — you guessed it– Game of Thrones. Big Boi told Vulture that he was excited at the prospect of creating content for one of his favorite shows. He’s even reading the books now so beware: his songs may contain spoilers.
According to Time, this project is aiming to expand the diversity of the GoT fanbase. Though the show is, by and large, HBO’s biggest series with a whopping 14.3 million viewers, over 75% of that viewership is white. By recruiting popular rappers and latin artists inspired by the show, the network is hoping to broaden GoT‘s appeal among their demographics.
It’s exceedingly unfortunate that the ethnic representation in the show early on was limited, but as the world of Game of Thrones expands to include more and more of the nations outside of Westeros, you can bet diversity on the show is only going to improve. Most notably, Nathalie Emmanuel (who plays Danaerys’ emancipated handmaiden and translator, Missandei) was recently confirmed by Deadline to be a regular for the fifth season (spoiler: if you’ve read the books, it’s safe to expect her in most episodes this season as well).
