Viewers everywhere last night were shocked, concerned, offended and amused when John Travolta announced Idina Menzel to perform “Let It Go”…and he totally butchered her name.
As you might have expected, this launched immediate social media backlash. There’s the parody twitter account, the buzzfeed list of Travolta’d Celebrity Names, plenty of tumblr rants, and gifs galore. And of course, it made all the talk shows this morning too.
And while that’s all great and fun, let’s take a moment to acknowledge: John Travolta does have Dyslexia. He does, in fact, know who Idina Menzel is (hence the “wickedly talented” bit) and in a low-pressure situation, he would probably say her name without the slightest problem. But, as Ellen said, there were cameras everywhere! I bet those lights were pretty blinding and every eye in the audience was on him. It’s enough to make you feel bad for the guy. Does this mean we can’t joke about it? Not necessarily. Does this mean people should stop giving Travolta such a hard time about it? Yeah, it kinda does. (You can bet that if people are still bringing this up a month from now though, I’m going to jump at the opportunity to say, “Come on guys, let it go.” #getit?)
