Well, Amazon is ahead of schedule, that is. Ripper Street was cancelled after the second series, but Amazon Prime picked it up and we’ll be seeing a third series!
Deadline reports that Amazon Prime Instant Video has commissioned a third season for the cancelled BBC period show. Ratings dropped during the second series, but the show is so well loved and has so much potential that Amazon has been able to revive it. It sounds like Ripper Street will be returning to BBC One, but since it’s now Amazon’s baby, viewers can stream it Prime Instant Video before the series broadcasts on television.
Not only that, but according to this report by The Guardian, because of this outside funding, we can expect more bells and whistles in production.
BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson said: “This is an exceptional opportunity to bring back Ripper Street for a third series by working with a great partner.”
Vice-president of Amazon Instant Video Europe Tim Leslie said the Ripper Street announcement marked a “very exciting day for us” and said “things are changing”. He confirmed the company wants to work with more UK producers: “We want any and all to come to us. We just want great content … for our customers.”
Filming for Series 3 of Ripper Street begins in May!
