Fassbender and McAvoy Love Your Fanfiction

In the last several years, it would seem that fanfiction has taken on a life of its own.

Evidenced by the massive success of “50 Shades of Grey,” and the upcoming publication of a One Direction fanfic called “After.” And of course, long before fanfics were published, plenty of big authors like Cassandra Clare got their start on sites like fanfiction.net. For many rabid fangirls (this author included), fanfiction wasn’t some big mystery. For many actors and talk show hosts? It might have been — though Robert Pattinson once admitted to reading Twilight fanfiction.

Regardless. In a hilarious turn of events, BBC Talk Show Talent, Graham Norton made sure X-Men actors, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender were well-aware of the fan-made media circulating. During their visit to The Graham Norton Show, the host divied up a set of cards between himself and Hugh Jackman to read. The contents? Summaries of fanfics written about Fassbender and McAvoy from Archive of Our Own.

It does feel relevant to add that Graham Norton’s subject choice could be interpreted as some rude interaction in which the art of devoted fans is made into the butt of a joke. Personally, I’d like not to think of it that way. Perhaps Graham Norton was harsh — he seems to be that comedian who cares very little for being politically correct or appropriate, but then, how many comedians are? For this writer,  there’s no question, the reactions are the best part. Some men might be furious at the thought of slash fanfiction written about themselves. These guys? Fassbender and McAvoy just think it’s wonderful. And that makes them wonderful.
